Chapters 1-6 Summary

The first five chapters are very interesting. Lots of things happen. The book starts off with Daniel and Paddy pick pocketing a man. They stole his wallet and got away they are good together. The wallet was full of bank notes. One good thing about there pick pocketing campaign is that they never steal from the people that really need the cash. They only steal from the more fortunate people. Although stealing is always bad they do need the money and stealing is there only option. In the first chapter they also meet Mr. Thomas Andrews designer of the Titanic. When he suspects that Paddy and Daniel are going to steal his wallet, instead of turning them into the law and acting angry, he talks to them in a friendly manner. He also challenges Daniel to find a way in which the Titanic could sink for Mr. Andrews thinks it is unsinkable. Daniel is obsessed with finding out a way it can sink and spends long hours thinking about it.
Through out chapter two it shows a mother, Amelia Bronson, and her daughter, Sophie Bronson protesting for women's rights in Piccadilly Circus. Amelia is very a obnoxious women that is stubborn and relentless. Her daughter and her quickly draw attention to themselves because of there obnoxiousness and the fact that they are Americans. They are soon being arrested by the bobbies. Luckily they have tickets aboard the great Titanic and will be back home in less than a month.
In chapter three the book is shown in Alfie Huggins's point of view. He is a 15 year old boy ,temporarily alone, because his mom left him and his dad is working on a ship. In the chapter he tries to turn in bank notes that his dad had earned in his job. The clerk however will not let him because the notes are to his mom ,Sarah Huggins whom left him. Since he no longer has a mom to raise him and has a father that is always at sea. He decided that he would try to join the White Star crew with his father so he would not have to be alone. He has to lie about his age to do this.
In chapter four, five, and six Daniel and Paddy meet back in there home, an abandoned printer's shop. As Daniel works on finding out a way the Titanic could sink Paddy gets food. Paddy gets distracted when he see's a drawing set that he wants to get for Daniel. Even though earlier Daniel told Paddy not to use the banknotes, Paddy runs to the hiding place where the banknotes lay and takes one. He picks up the set and asks the shopkeeper if he could buy it. The shopkeeper tells a boy to go make sure the banknote is authentic before he sells the set to Paddy. Paddy not realizing that the boy is actually going to get Mr. Kevin Gilhooley, the man Paddy and Daniel had stolen the wallet from. Kevin Gilhooley is brother of James Gilhooley and the leader of a very serious, very dangerous gang. Daniel and Paddy stole from the wrong man and now the were going to pay for it. Paddy quickly picks up a stool and throws it at the shop window shattering the glass as he jumps through it. He runs as fast as he can back to the printer's shop to find Daniel. He isn't their. He had left to go find Mr. Andrews and tell him what he discovered. Paddy ran to the docks to go find him. He finds him and tells him about the Gilhooley's. As they step on the dock to find Mr. Andrews to ask for advice and help, Paddy spots Kevin Gilhooley and his men. They catch Daniel as Paddy runs away. Paddy is blocked by a big box full of sheets he quickly jumps in it as he hears Daniel's cries of pain. The box with the linens is lifted and brought aboard the Titanic. Paddy knows his best friend is dead. He gets out of the cargo box and runs inside the ship. He is met with beautifully decorated walls , furniture, and elegant French doors. He decides right then and there that if he where to stay in Belfast he would be caught and killed like his friend. He will stowaway on the Titanic until it reaches its final destination, America
